Should I take Anatomy and Physiology before starting Medical School?
My university offers a year long course in Anatomy and Physiology with real human cadavers. I want to be as prepared as I can be for medical school (I plan to go to medical school and go into either plastic surgery or cardiovascular surgery) so I was thinking of taking it starting in the fall, but Anatomy and Physiology is not a pre-med requirement nor is it required for my major (Biochemistry). Should I take it anyway? Will it make me better prepared?
Most definitely! The key to becoming a good clinician is a firm grounding in BASIC SCIENCE. Anatomy and Physiology are the foundation of all medicine. Being thoroughly familiar with the human body will make your first two years of medical school much easier and give you a greater appreciation of the organism level of organization as you are in a major that is molecular/submolecular in it’s content. You will also be a “pro” at dissecting once you reach med school. The time you will save breezing through Human Anatomy in med school can be spent on other coursework or even doing a research project. Surgical internships/residencies are extremely competitive and any EXTRA work you do even in the first two years of med school will make you a preferred candidate. I took an elective of Surgical Anatomy in second year where a classmate and I shared a cadaver and did mock surgeries. If you have other time to take other electives,as an undergraduate, I suggest Embryology and Histology as well. Good luck!
